Prelims:
Matt Brown defeats Tim Means by submission (guillotine choke) at 4.44mins of Rd1
After some disappointing prelims this was the perfect response with Brown and Means going to war on the feet, trading big punches and elbows. Means started brightly as he found a home for his strikes, but Brown bit down on his gumshield and worked his way back into it. Towards the end of the round Brown clocked his opponent with an elbow to the temple that hurt him, then another soon after that had suddenly had Means dropping to his knees looking with a sloppy takedown attempt. His neck was out and Brown seized it, dropping into the guillotine choke and forcing a quick tapout. Great win for Brown and credit to Means too for helping to put on a show.
Alex Garcia defeats Mike Swick by unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27 x2)
Underwhelming return to Octagon action for Swick afer a very long layoff. His jab looked relatively crisp, but there was nothing else coming behind it. Garcia wasn’t offering much standing either, but every time he moved in for a takedown he was able to land it, doing so in each round to secure the decision victory.
John Howard defeats Cathal Pendred by split decision (29-28 x2, 28-29)
This fight was often contested at a fairly tenative pace which was frustrating as when Howard did opt to unleash with combinations he looked dangerous and his leg kicks were doing damage. Too often he was sucked into somewhat lethargic clinch work with Pendred though or just being hesitant to exchange and that made this fight closer on the scorecards than it should have been.
Cody Garbrandt defeats Henry Briones by unanimous decision (30-27 x3)
These two were happy to engage at striking range over the course of three rounds, with Garbrandt largely getting the better of it with his crisp punches, though Briones found his mark at times too, particularly with the jab. The fact that Briones face was bloodied up for much of the fight tells it’s own story though and Garbrandt also dropped him briefly in the second stanza.
Louis Smolka defeats Neil Seery via unanimous decision (30-27 x3)
Cody Pfister defeats Yosdenis Cedeno via unanimous decision (29-28 x3)
