For a country that loves sports, cage fighting is still a relatively taboo word in Australia, commonly associated with blood, gore and unnecessary violence. This May, UFC premieres in Adelaide and in the Fight Night 65 it features, as one’d expect, an Aussie dominated fight card. Even when the fight night was confirmed sometime February this year and the headline fight features the much loved Mark Hunt, Australian MMA fighter of 2014, the residence of the city still debates whether or not they will be welcoming the entrance of UFC. Regardless of the opinions, this Fight Night will prove to be of great significance to the progress of the sport in Australia.
Warm Up Exercise
The open secret about UFC Fight Night 65 is that it is a ‘warm up’ to whet the appetite of Australian fans for UFC 193 in Melbourne scheduled for Nov 2015. Most of the Australians scheduled for the Adelaide competition are hoping that a strong performance in May 2015 will earn them a spot in Melbourne later this year. Daniel Kelly in an interview with news.com.au earlier this month said, “That’s the big aim, that’s why I wanted to get on that Adelaide card so I can fight in Melbourne and have a good performance,” he said. “It’s the first UFC event in Melbourne and it’s a pay per view card.”
