Floyd Mayweather recently teased the possibility of a rematch in the boxing ring with Conor McGregor next year, and though he lost the first fight, ‘The Notorious’ appears to fancy his chances of getting revenge against the undefeated superstar if they do run it back.
“I beat Floyd if we rematch,” McGregor wrote on Twitter. “Untold truth was it was me who carried him the early rounds playing pitty patty. Every single shot I threw early landed. From body to head I was playing ping pong.
“I come out full force, and today, I end Floyd.”
McGregor’s claim comes a little less than a month since Mayweather first suggested that discussions were happening behind the scenes about a potential second clash between the two.
“I want to go out there this weekend and have fun,” Mayweather had told The Daily Mail days prior to his second round exhibition bout TKO of Mikura Asakura in Japan last month. “Then I have another exhibition [in] Dubai in November and me and Conor McGregor in 2023.
“We don’t know if it’s going to be an exhibition or a real fight. But there’s been talks of both. I would prefer an exhibition.
“I am not into fights where I am going to take any real punishment. So, guys like Conor McGregor and guys that don’t really hit hard such as YouTubers or UFC guys, I don’t really mind colliding with those kinds of individuals but nothing where I am going to put myself in a position where I am going to harm myself or hurt myself.”
Since then British Tabloid ‘The Sun’ has claimed that a source inside Mayweather’s camp had told them that discussions had been revolving around a potential two-fight showdown between the two superstars, one in boxing and then the other in MMA, in what would be a a staggering $1.5 billion deal.
However, that seems far fetched given that in his own words the 45-year-old Mayweather wants fights where he doesn’t take any punishment, whereas there would be little doubt in anyone’s minds that he would take a beating if he stepped into the Octagon against McGregor given that he has no MMA training under his belt.
Still, a boxing rematch is always possible, though at the same time all this talk could well just be Mayweather’s way of staying in the headlines and generating interest in his other exhibition bouts, which will attract far less interest than a second showdown with McGregor.
