The decorated lightweight made his MMA debut at WEC 5, and won the fight in the first round. Melendez then went twelve more fights without a loss, and won the WEC and Strikeforce Lightweight championships over that time.

He became the most dominant lightweight champion in Strikeforce, defending the belt four times (not including one interim title defence) before moving onto the UFC. His 24 fight career (21-3) has seen him fight in the world’s top MMA organisations against the top contenders in his division.
