UFC 200 has landed another notable woman’s bantamweight match-up between Cat Zingano and Julianna Pena.
Zingano will have been out of action for well over a year by the time she sets foot in the Octagon in Las Vegas on July 9th, with her last outing ending in just 14 seconds when Ronda Rousey armbarred her at UFC 184 to successfully defend her title.
Prior to that ‘Alpha’ had been undefeated and had been on a three-fight winning streak since joining the UFC in 2012.
Meanwhile, Pena is coming off a win over Jessica Eye back in October of last year. The 26 year-old had previously won The Ultimate Fighter season 18 and is on a three fight winning streak in total, leaving her placed at No.5 in the 135lb rankings, just two places behind Zingano.
Pena’s been distracted by legal issues over the past few months related to a drunken fight with staff at a bar in Washington that left her facing two assault charges, but she’s just been granted a continuance, which means her slate will be wiped clean as long as she stays out of trouble for the next year.
That means Pena can now get back to focusing solely on her UFC career, and this major upcoming fight with Zingano.
The fmatch-up adds further depth to an already stacked card that’s headlined by a welterweight rematch between Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz, with a woman’s bantamweight title fight between Miesha Tate and Amanda Nunes, plus an interim 145lb title bout between Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar among the attractions so far announced for the Las Vegas show.
