Former UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones was in attendance at the Europa Expo in Pheonix, Arizona when he was challenged to a submission grappling match by a 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu brown belt this past weekend.
Jones, who had been signing autographs at the show, agreed to take to the mat and gave a glimpse of why he’s considered one of the world’s best fighters as he tapped out his opponent with a guillotine choke.
Later Jones also showed good sportsmanship when he grappled with a young girl before tapping out to an armbar.
“Was randomly called out by some MMA fans to try a grappling match today after my autograph signing,” Jones said of the impromptu mat work. “I thought hey why not. Ended up rolling with a brown belt and a purple belt. Hope you guys enjoyed it as much as I did. May even try it again tomorrow.”
Clearly Jones still has a desire to compete, but his immediate MMA future remains uncertain as he’s still awaiting an arbitration hearing with USADA on October 31st regarding his failed drug test prior to UFC 200 in July, while he’ll also face a further hearing with the Nevada State Athletic Commission as well before the length of any potential suspension can be established.
